San Diego State University’s Project for Sanitation Justice (PSJ) deployed a three-pronged approach to gathering empirical data on public restroom access in San Diego County. A summary of our initial countywide findings can be found here, with our countywide publicly-accessible web map here: https://arcg.is/1SDybi. In this brief, we focus on Downtown San Diego and offer data from three sources: 1) public restroom spatial database development and verification (where do public restrooms exist?); 2) comprehensive field assessment or “toilet audit” of all public restroom facilities (how accessible are existing restroom facilities, and what health and safety features do they have?); and 3) in-depth structured interviews on basic sanitation needs (social survey) with 54 people experiencing homelessness (what are the experiences of people who are most reliant on public restroom facilities?).
