PSJ Outreach
SDSU-Imperial County student researcher Sergio Olivas Coto is currently conducting a community survey of people who live, work, and learn in Imperial County regarding their public restroom access needs, experiences, and concerns.
This survey is part of an expansion of PSJ into Imperial County. Imperial Valley faces unique challenges such as extreme heat, agricultural labor, rural geography, and limited public facilities. The goal of this project is to center the experiences of Imperial County residents, which are often missing from sanitation research.

RE:BORDER Conference
The PSJ team tables at events across San Diego and Imperial Counties to engage with members of the local community about their priorities around public restroom access.
We often ask people to write down their responses a question that they can answer as many different times as they want: What's one reason for or against more and better public restrooms in your neighborhood?
Thank you to everyone who has talked with us about this important - but often not discussed - issue!
Politifest
The PSJ team presented “Still in Crisis: A Walking Tour of Restroom Access in San Diego,” an educational and interactive walking tour through downtown San Diego that explored the ongoing challenges surrounding public restroom access.
We highlighted the history of public restroom access, examined the current state of restroom availability throughout San Diego, and explored how limited access to public restrooms impacts individuals and communities.
Participants had the opportunity to learn about sanitation justice, engage in conversations about restroom accessibility, and help pilot a tool designed to document the availability and accessibility of public restrooms across San Diego.
