We believe that safe and consistent access to drinking water, toilets, menstrual hygiene products, and other basic sanitation resources are fundamental human rights, cornerstones of public health, and essential public services.

Only one restroom downtown remains open 24/7 – and it’s at a homeless shelter. 📣📣 The city of San Diego recently closed 13 public restrooms in Mission Bay, near some of San Diego’s most beloved beach areas. Due to public outrage, the restrooms will reopen this Friday. This is great news. A day at the beach will no longer include a scavenger hunt for restrooms. Those of us with overactive bladders, enlarged prostates, or mobility restrictions will have more options to meet our basic bodily needs. But this issue is far from solved. 🚽🏆PSJ won an award!🏆🚽 We're thrilled to announce that PSJ is the winner of the inaugural Community Champion Award as part of the Flushies - a brand-new annual awards program honoring individuals, cities, agencies, and organizations advancing access to clean, safe, and equitable restrooms. The award program is backed by a coalition of partners, including PHLUSH, the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation, the American Council of the Blind, Throne Labs, and PERIOD. The Menstrual Movement, the American Restroom Association, and the American Association of People with Disabilities. The PSJ team is so honored to be recognized with this Flushy award alongside truly impressive public restroom champions from across the U.S. - congratulations to our fellow award winners! We thank Throne Labs, their partners, and the esteemed review panel for their efforts to spotlight this important and often overlooked issue. We hope this inspires others to advocate for public restroom access in their own communities! Everyone deserves safe, free, and dignified access to toilets, handwashing facilities, and menstrual care - it's a basic human right and a public health imperative.
🚽 What does PSJ do during our field research? 🚽 ✅ Our core goal has always been to document public restroom access in order to provide accurate information regarding where more restroom access is needed. ✅ Sometimes the restrooms we try to visit are closed or in disrepair. Same with porta-potties. ✅ Still, we try to keep track of it all, and make that information available to the public. Here, PSJ team members Brandon, Tavee, Vincent, Ian, Elise, and Ariana break down some of what we found during our recent outings to downtown San Diego. This is * before * the latest round of budget cuts takes effect: ❗ Shortened hours at the Civic Center public restroom at 3rd & C - cut from 24/7 to 6am to 10pm ❗Removal of porta-potties and handwashing stations across downtown and especially in the East Village ❗ No stall doors on some restrooms near the Harbor/Seaport Village ❗ Some restrooms that were previously publicly available no longer are, like the restroom at The Hilton's parking garage, or closed entirely like The Legend at Petco Park

UPDATE❗❗❗ Thank you to those who were able to attend/speak at the City of San Diego budget hearing! Know that your actions made a difference. Now, it's time for the county to hear us. Just like we did for the city, the county needs our same response and energy. Important restrooms, comfort stations, and the Neil Good Day Center are being cut from the budget and are set to shut down. When public restrooms close, our environment is negatively impacted and the public becomes at risk for disease outbreaks. We are calling on the County of San Diego to create and fund a dedicated, permanent public-restroom access program to support municipalities across the county. Join PSJ as we fight against budget cuts to public restroom-access‼️‼️ The City of San Diego is considering closing permanent restrooms and removing porta-potties in Mission Bay Park, Fiesta Island, Shoreline Beach, and Balboa Park. The City is also considering eliminating funding for the Neil Good Day Center - a lifeline for unhoused people. Removing restrooms does not remove the human need to use them. If Neil Good is closed, folks would be left with very few reliable public restrooms in the East Village. We’re asking the City of San Diego to: Preserve funding for public restroom access across the City of San Diego including all services at the Neil Good Day Center Restore all porta-potties and handwashing stations in Downtown San Diego and especially in the East Village. Redirect funding from reactive cleaning activities like bleaching streets and sidewalks to preventative interventions like restrooms, handwashing facilities, and trash cans Use our Linktree in bio for ways to take actions and learn more.

PSJ Tours the Pride Center! Erin is a member of PSJ as well as the Pride Center and was kind enough to give us a tour! The SDSU Pride Center is a great example of a "Single-Occupancy All-Gender" restroom that meets WaSH components. It's inclusive to all users with different needs, such as those with mobility issues, families, people with caretakers, and people of all genders. This restroom is a great example of how these facilities help support the health and well-being of the community. 🚽🧻 #psj #projectforsanitationjustice #sandiego #SDSU #sanitation
